Before You Buy

At Ease Before You Buy

Plan your lighting with confidence.

A room-by-room guide to choosing the right fixture, size, placement and installation details for a considered home.

Browse the guide
01

Start with the purpose

Choose a lighting type

Start by deciding what the light needs to do in the room. Decorative lighting can create a focal point, provide useful task light, or add a softer layer alongside the main light source.

Pendant lights

Best above dining tables, kitchen islands and other surfaces where a focused pool of light is useful.

Chandeliers

A statement choice for rooms with enough ceiling height and a table or seating area that benefits from a central focal point.

Wall lights

Useful beside mirrors, beds and hallways, or anywhere a layered glow is preferred over a single overhead source.

Ceiling lights

A practical choice for general illumination, particularly where a pendant drop or wall fitting would not suit the room.

Bathroom vanity lights

Designed around mirror and vanity areas, with product rating and installation position needing careful checking.

Table and floor lamps

Flexible layers for reading, bedside lighting and ambient illumination without changing the fixed wiring.

02

Start with the space

What to measure

Before choosing a light, measure the space around it rather than looking at the fitting in isolation. Note the available width, depth and height, then compare those measurements with the full product dimensions shown on this page.

  • Measure the width of the wall, mirror, table or kitchen island.
  • Check the fitting depth so doors, cupboards and walkways remain clear.
  • For pendant lights, measure the ceiling height and the available drop.
  • Allow space around the fitting so it feels balanced rather than crowded.

03

Find the right proportion

Choose the right size

The right size depends on the furniture and architecture around the light. A fitting should feel intentional in the room, with enough presence to be noticed without overwhelming the space.

Dining tables

As a starting point, choose a pendant or chandelier around half to two-thirds of the table width. Wider tables may suit a larger fitting or a multi-light arrangement.

Kitchen islands

Compare the combined width of the lights with the island, then leave breathing room at both ends. Multiple pendants should be spaced evenly across the working surface.

Mirrors and wall lights

Compare the overall fitting width with the mirror or wall area. A wider version can create a more balanced look above a larger mirror, while a compact version suits narrower spaces.

Use the furniture or mirror below as the reference point for proportion.
04

Think about everyday use

Plan placement and clearance

Good placement balances visual impact with comfortable clearance. Consider how people move through the room, where the light will be viewed from, and whether nearby furniture or doors could interfere.

  • Over a dining table, keep the fitting high enough to preserve conversation and sightlines.
  • Above a kitchen island, check clearance for cooking, cleaning and everyday movement.
  • Beside a mirror or bed, consider eye level, reach and the fitting depth.
  • For several lights, plan equal spacing and align them with the furniture below.
Dining table Centre the fitting with the table and keep the drop comfortable for sightlines.
Kitchen island Distribute several pendants evenly and leave visual breathing room at both ends.
Mirror or bedside Check eye level, reach and depth so the fitting works comfortably every day.

These are planning starting points, not fixed installation dimensions. Always check the product dimensions and your room conditions before fitting.

05

Plan around the room

Plan by room

The best fitting depends on how a room is used and what already sits beneath it. Use the guide below as a planning starting point, then compare the selected product's dimensions with your own space.

Dining room

Centre the fitting over the table and keep its scale in proportion with the tabletop. Leave comfortable sightlines for conversation.

Kitchen island

Use one larger fitting or an evenly spaced group. Check the total arrangement against the island length and leave room at both ends.

Living room

Consider the viewing angle, ceiling height and nearby seating. A statement fitting should have enough breathing room around it.

Bedroom

Use wall or bedside lighting to create a softer layer. Check the fitting depth and make sure switches and walkways remain practical.

Hallway and staircase

Prioritise head clearance, door openings and movement through the space. Repeated fittings should follow a consistent visual rhythm.

Bathroom and vanity

Plan around the mirror and basin, then confirm the product's IP rating, zone suitability and wiring requirements before ordering.

06

Prepare before ordering

Check before installation

Check the technical details before ordering so the fitting works with your existing electrical arrangement and intended room.

  • Confirm the light source, bulb base, maximum wattage and whether bulbs are included.
  • Check whether the fitting is dimmable and whether your bulbs and dimmer are compatible.
  • Confirm the voltage, power source and whether the fitting requires hardwired installation.
  • For bathroom use, confirm the product IP rating and suitable bathroom zone with a qualified electrician.
  • Check the product dimensions, fixing position and ceiling or wall support before installation.
Installation note

Mains-powered lighting should be installed by a qualified electrician. Do not rely on a room label alone when checking bathroom suitability; the product rating and installation position must both be confirmed.

FAQs

Before you order

Frequently Asked Questions

Helpful answers about choosing your light, delivery, installation and returns. Product-specific dimensions and technical details are shown in the product information above.

Choosing your light

How do I check whether this light is right for my room?

Start with the full dimensions shown on this product page, then compare them with the available space around your table, kitchen island, mirror, wall or ceiling. Check the fitting's width, depth, height and total drop, and make sure doors, cupboards and walkways remain clear. Our Before You Buy guide explains how to plan the proportion and placement.

What should I check before ordering?

Please check the product dimensions, finish, colour, number of lights, bulb base, maximum wattage, voltage and whether bulbs are included. Also check whether the fitting is dimmable, how it is installed and whether your ceiling or wall can support it. If you are unsure about compatibility, please contact us before ordering.

Are bulbs included, and can I use a dimmer?

Please use the bulb and included-items information shown for the specific product. Dimming depends on the fitting, bulb and dimmer working together, so please check all three before installation. If the product page does not confirm a feature, contact us for clarification rather than assuming it is included.

Can I install the light myself?

Mains-powered lighting should be installed by a qualified electrician. Please check the product information and installation instructions before work begins. For bathroom lighting, the product's IP rating and the intended installation position must both be suitable; a qualified electrician should confirm this.

Delivery and tracking

How long will my order take to arrive?

Estimated times depend on the product, stock location, destination and delivery service selected. Use the table below as a guide.

Destination and service Estimated total arrival time Typical charge
UK standard delivery Approximately 3-6 weeks Usually free
UK express delivery Approximately 4-10 working days Usually from £9
US warehouse stock Approximately 4-9 working days Usually from $10

US factory-direct, express air freight Typically 1-3 weeks, plus any product preparation time Confirmed before payment
European standard delivery Approximately 3-6 weeks Usually free
European express delivery Approximately 4-13 working days Usually from £9
Australia standard delivery Approximately 3-6 weeks Usually free
Canada and other destinations Shown at checkout or confirmed by Customer Service Depends on the order

Total arrival times include the typical preparation and delivery periods where both are available. Factory-direct preparation can vary by product. These timings are estimates rather than guaranteed delivery dates. Please wait until your order has arrived and been checked before booking an electrician or installer.

Will my order arrive in one parcel?

Larger orders may be split into several parcels so that individual products can be handled safely. Parcels may have separate tracking numbers and can arrive on different days. Once an order is dispatched, we will email the available tracking details.

What should I do if my tracking has not updated?

Please first check your dispatch email and its tracking link, including your junk or spam folder. If tracking has not updated for an extended period, contact support@ateasehomelife.co.uk with your order number. We can check the latest information with the warehouse or carrier.

What if my parcel arrives damaged, missing or incorrect?

Please inspect your order as soon as it arrives. Where possible, contact us within seven days with your order number, clear photos of the product, the outer and inner packaging, and details of anything missing or incorrect. Once confirmed, we will normally arrange replacement parts, a replacement product or the correct item at no extra cost.

Returns and refunds

Can I return the light if I change my mind?

For an eligible item, you may request a return within 14 days of receiving it. Please contact us before sending anything back. Once approved, the item must normally be returned within a further 14 days. It must be unused, uninstalled and resaleable, with its original packaging, parts, accessories and instructions.

Which items are usually not eligible for a change-of-mind return?

Made-to-order, bespoke or personalised products may not usually be returned once production has begun. Installed, altered, assembled, used or incomplete items may also be excluded, as may clearance or final-sale products where the product page restricts returns. Bulk orders of three or more of the same item and some overseas warehouse returns may require individual review.

Who pays for return postage?

For change-of-mind and other buyer-initiated returns, the customer will normally arrange and pay for return postage. We recommend a tracked service and keeping proof of postage. Express delivery, remote-area supplements and other additional delivery charges are normally non-refundable once dispatched. This does not affect your statutory rights for faulty, damaged or incorrectly described items.

When will my refund be issued?

After the approved return reaches the correct warehouse and passes inspection, we will submit the refund to the original payment method within three working days. Your payment provider may then take additional time to show the funds: PayPal usually takes 1-3 working days and card payments usually take 3–7 working days.

How do I request a return or exchange?

Email support@ateasehomelife.co.uk with your order number, the item you wish to return and the reason. Photos of the product and packaging can help us process the request more quickly. Please wait for our instructions and return address; do not send the parcel to an unconfirmed warehouse.
