Light a narrow hallway with several soft, shielded sources rather than one exposed, high-output lamp. Aim light at walls and the floor, keep bright points out of your normal sightline, and use controls that let you reduce output after dark.
A hallway has little viewing distance, so glare that might feel acceptable in a larger room can become uncomfortable here. I'd usually prioritise diffusion and even spacing over maximum brightness. Your goal is a clear route with recognisable steps, doorways and obstacles, not a uniformly brilliant corridor.
Choose fittings that hide the bright point
Look for wall lights with an opaque or translucent shade, a deep diffuser, or an up-and-down distribution that prevents a direct view of the lamp. A bare bulb or shallow clear-glass fitting can create a sharp hotspot at eye level, especially when you approach it from the far end of the hall.
Projection matters too. In a tight passage, rule out fittings that intrude into the walking line or sit where shoulders, coats or doors can catch them. Ask the retailer for the total projection from the wall and check it against your narrowest clear width, including door swings.
Layer low-output light along the route
One powerful ceiling light tends to produce a bright pool, darker ends and strong reflections. Two or more modest sources spread along the route generally feel calmer. Wall lights can lift the vertical surfaces, while a small ceiling fitting or discreet low-level light can help reveal changes in floor level.
Use a warm or warm-neutral colour appearance that suits the rooms opening off the hallway, and keep all sources reasonably consistent. I think dimming is especially valuable here: it lets you set a practical level during busy periods and a gentler level at night. If you don't need continuous light, a well-positioned occupancy sensor can reduce unnecessary brightness, but the light shouldn't switch off while someone is still using stairs or searching for a door.
Check the finish in the real hallway
Pale matt walls help bounce light without creating mirror-like highlights. Gloss paint, glass-fronted pictures and mirrors can reflect an exposed lamp back into your eyes, so consider their position when choosing beam direction. Before committing, view a lit sample from both ends of the route and at the eye heights of the people who use it.
Confirm the fitting’s lamp compatibility, dimming method and replacement access with the retailer. Have mounting, wiring, controls, any stair-related requirements and compliance with local rules confirmed by a qualified electrician. That leaves you with a simple decision: choose shallow, shielded fittings and several controllable pools of light; rule out a single dazzling source.
